"There's something down there..." the boy thought to himself as he peered into the gaping darkness below.
The unspeakable horrors that waited for children like him amidst the shadows had always sent chills down his spine, so without hesitation he picked up the largest brick he could find and threw it down the well.
The well had dried up during the hot summer, so there was no splash of water--only a "thud" followed by a faint whimper. Then silence.
Having successfully rid himself of whatever possible evils lurked down in those black depths, the boy took a step back with a glowing look of accomplishment on his face.
But before he could fully congratulate himself for the good work, he remembered that he still had to seek out his brother...because his mother would be unhappy with them both if they were late for supper after such a long game of hide and seek.
